Julien Meyer continues the natural-wine pioneering of Patrick and Mireille Meyer in Alsace. Les Pierres Chaudes is a Pinot Noir farmed biodynamically and made naturally, light and fresh with cherry, red berries and an earthy, savoury edge.
Description
The Meyer estate in Alsace is one of the founding names of natural wine in the region, established by Patrick and Mireille Meyer and continued under the Julien Meyer label. Les Pierres Chaudes, the warm stones, is a Pinot Noir farmed biodynamically and made with minimal intervention, vinified without additions to let the variety and the site speak. Alsace lies in the rain shadow of the Vosges, a dry, sunny but cool region where the slow ripening of Pinot Noir gives bright red fruit, high acidity and moderate alcohol. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and raised simply, with no obvious oak, which keeps the colour pale and the fruit fresh and transparent. The colour is light, bright ruby. The nose shows fresh cherry and red berries with an earthy, faintly herbal and floral edge typical of natural Pinot. The palate is light bodied and supple, with crisp acidity, very fine tannin and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees in a Burgundy glass. It pairs well with poultry, lighter game and mushroom dishes.
