Judith Beck farms biodynamically in Gols, Burgenland, and makes this young red from the native Austrian Zweigelt. Light and fresh at 12.5 percent, it shows bright cherry, raspberry and a peppery, savoury lift.
Description
Judith Beck Zweigelt is a biodynamic red from Burgenland in eastern Austria, made by Judith Beck, who took over the family estate in Gols in 2004 after working in Bordeaux, Piedmont and Chile. Zweigelt is a native Austrian crossing of Blaufränkisch and St Laurent, valued for its juicy red fruit and gentle tannin. The vineyards sit on gravel and loess near the shallow, reflective Lake Neusiedl, whose warming effect helps the grapes ripen fully while the surrounding flatland keeps nights cool, holding acidity and freshness. Beck farms to biodynamic principles, a member of the Pannobile group, working the soil with composts and plant preparations rather than synthetic inputs. The wine is made in a light, early drinking style, with gentle extraction and little or no new oak so the fruit and the cool-climate freshness lead. It is bright ruby red, with aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry and red currant over a peppery, faintly herbal note. The palate is light bodied and fresh, with crisp acidity, soft tannin and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits roast pork, chicken and lighter mushroom dishes.
