Judith Beck makes this biodynamic, vegan rosé in Gols, Burgenland, from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch aged in stainless steel. Lake Neusiedl moderates the climate, giving a fresh, pale wine of red berries, cherry and crisp acidity.
Description
Judith Beck farms biodynamically in Gols, in the Burgenland region of eastern Austria, part of a young generation reshaping the area. This vegan rosé blends the local Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, both red grapes suited to the warm Pannonian climate. Nearby Lake Neusiedl acts as a natural buffer, storing the day's warmth and releasing it at night, which lengthens the growing season while the diurnal swing keeps acidity firm. The grapes are pressed for a pale rosé and fermented and aged for around four months in stainless steel, a reductive approach that locks in primary fruit and freshness with no oak influence. Biodynamic farming and minimal cellar handling keep the wine direct and clean. The colour is bright pale pink. The nose shows red berries, cherry and red currant with citrus peel and white flowers. The palate is dry and crisp, with green apple acidity, light red fruit and a clean, savoury finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with light salads, fresh fish and soft cheeses.
