Judith Beck makes this Burgenland orange wine from Grüner Veltliner, Neuburger and Pinot Blanc grown on a cold, windswept hill nicknamed Koreaa. Made on skins and aged on its lees, it is fresh and textured, with green apple, pear and a herbal cut.
Description
Judith Beck farms biodynamically in Gols, in eastern Burgenland near Lake Neusiedl in Austria. This orange wine comes from a cold, exposed hill the locals have called Koreaa since the 1950s, a windswept site that ripens later than the surrounding vineyards and so keeps freshness and acidity in the fruit. The blend is Grüner Veltliner with Neuburger and Pinot Blanc, white grapes with good natural acidity and a peppery, orchard fruit character. The wine is fermented on its skins, which extracts light tannin, phenolics and amber colour from the skins to give texture and savoury depth, then aged on its lees, the spent yeast cells, which over time release mannoproteins that add body and a fine, creamy texture while protecting the wine from oxidation. Biodynamic, natural and vegan. The colour is a pale amber. The nose shows green apple, pear and citrus peel with white flowers and a herbal lift, and the palate is dry, fresh and lightly grippy with a saline, lees driven texture and a clean finish. Serve chilled at 10 to 12 degrees. Good with white fish, roast chicken and salads.
