Judith Beck makes this biodynamic, natural Zweigelt in Burgenland, Austria. Light at 12 percent alcohol and aged ten months in barrel, it is juicy and lively, with ripe cherry, red berry and a fresh, peppery lift.
Description
Cherry Bomb is a Zweigelt red from Burgenland in Austria, made by Judith Beck, an oenologist who trained in Bordeaux, Piedmont and Chile before returning home. The wine is farmed biodynamically and made as a natural wine, vegan and low in intervention. Zweigelt, Austria's most planted red grape, is a cross of Blaufränkisch and St Laurent that gives bright cherry fruit, moderate tannin and a fresh, juicy character, which is why this bottling stays light and lively at just 12 percent alcohol. Burgenland's warm, sunny climate beside the Neusiedlersee ripens the fruit fully while the grape's natural acidity keeps the wine fresh. Natural fermentation with wild yeasts and ten months in barrel give a softer texture and a little savoury depth without heavy oak. The colour is a vivid cherry red. The nose leads with ripe cherry and red berries, with a peppery, herbal lift and a faint earthy note. The palate is light and supple, with soft tannins and a fresh, fruity finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 degrees. It suits charcuterie, grilled pork and lighter dishes.
