Judith Beck farms biodynamically in Burgenland, and her Bambule! is a natural Zweigelt. Fifteen months in oak give a vivid, low-intervention red of fresh cherry, red berries and damp earth, with light tannin and a peppery lift from the region’s warm Pannonian climate.
Description
Judith Beck works her family vineyards in Gols, in the Austrian region of Burgenland, where naturalness and minimal intervention guide the cellar. Bambule! is a natural Zweigelt, Austria's signature red grape, grown on the gravel, sand and clay soils near Lake Neusiedl. The lake moderates the warm Pannonian climate and lengthens the ripening season, while the surrounding flat terrain and steady winds keep the fruit healthy and concentrate flavour without heavy extraction. Fermentation runs with native yeasts and little added, in keeping with the biodynamic and natural approach, and the wine then spends fifteen months in oak barrels. That ageing is about gentle oxygen exchange and texture rather than wood flavour, so the fruit stays vibrant while the tannins soften. The wine is bright ruby and light on its feet. The nose is fresh and lively, with cherry and red berries lifted by a peppery spice and a clear note of damp earth that points back to its natural roots. The palate is juicy and supple, low in tannin, with crisp acidity carrying a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at fourteen to sixteen degrees with roast pork, charcuterie or mushroom dishes.
