Description
Juan Gil traces its roots to 1916 and is now run by the fourth generation, working D.O. Jumilla in the southeast of Spain. The Silver Label is pure Monastrell, the region's signature grape, farmed organically on the high, arid plateau between Jumilla and Murcia. This is a hot, dry, sun-drenched climate with poor stony soils and old vines, conditions that limit yields and ripen Monastrell fully, building the deep colour, ripe fruit and natural body that mark the wine. Altitude brings cooler nights that hold enough acidity to keep the ripeness in balance. The wine is aged 12 months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the firm Monastrell tannin and adds toasted, spiced complexity, and it is made organic and vegan. The colour is a dense purple-red, the nose shows ripe plum and dark berries with violet, liquorice and toasted nuts, and the palate is full-bodied and warm at 14.5%, with ripe fruit, firm tannin, pepper spice and a long smoky finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees.
