Juan Gil, founded in Jumilla in 1916, makes this dry Muscat from Moscatel de Grano Menudo in a hot, arid region with wide day to night swings. Young and unoaked, it shows peach, apricot and white flowers, dry and lively.
Description
Juan Gil Moscatel Seco is a dry white from the DO Jumilla in Murcia, made by a winery founded in 1916 and now run by the fourth generation. The grape is Moscatel de Grano Menudo, the small berried Muscat prized for its perfume. Jumilla has an extreme, arid climate with little rainfall and an average temperature of around 16 degrees, but its wide day to night temperature swings are the key to this wine. Warm days ripen the fruit while cold nights lock in acidity and preserve the volatile aromatic compounds that give Muscat its floral, grapey character. The wine is made young and unoaked, fermented cool in steel to protect those aromatics, and finished dry rather than sweet, which is unusual for a grape more often used for sweet wines. It is organic and vegan. The wine is pale and bright, the nose full of white peach, apricot and white flowers with lemon, orange peel and a hint of rose petal. The palate is clean, dry and lively, the fruit carried by fresh acidity to a crisp finish. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with food.
