Joseph Drouhin makes this Pommard from Pinot Noir in the Côte de Beaune, farmed biodynamically. Fourteen months in French oak give it black cherry, plum, earth and the firm, structured tannins that mark Pommard among the more powerful red Burgundies.
Description
This Pommard is a Pinot Noir from the Côte d'Or in Burgundy, made by Joseph Drouhin, the Beaune house founded in 1880 and now run by the fourth generation under biodynamic practice across its many parcels. Pommard sits on iron-rich clay and limestone soils on the Côte de Beaune, heavier and more ferruginous than its neighbours, which is why Pommard reds carry darker fruit, more colour and firmer tannins than most of the slope. The cool continental climate and the village's east-facing aspect hold acidity and give the wine its savoury depth. Ageing runs fourteen months in French oak barrels, where measured oxygen exchange settles the tannins and adds spice and a light toast without masking the fruit. The colour is deep ruby. The nose is black cherry, plum and blackcurrant over earth, undergrowth and a touch of oak spice. The palate is medium to full bodied and structured, with firm tannins, fresh acidity and a long finish that suits a few years in the cellar. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted ahead, with roast beef or game.
