Description
Joseph Drouhin is a Burgundy house founded in 1880 and based in Beaune, farming 78 hectares across the Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote Chalonnaise and Chablis using organic and biodynamic methods. This is a monovarietal Pinot Noir from the village appellation of Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. The slope here runs over limestone and marl with a thin, stony topsoil, a terroir that gives Morey reds their combination of red fruit, firm structure and earthy depth. Pinot Noir is thin-skinned and transparent to site, so gentle handling in the cellar is key. The wine is aged 16 months in French oak, a portion new, the slow oxygen exchange through the barrel building fine tannin and lending subtle spice while preserving the fruit. Expect a medium-bodied red with red cherry, raspberry and a savoury forest-floor and mushroom note, with fine, silky tannins and bright acidity carrying a long finish. Serve at 16 degrees in a wide bowl. It suits roast duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
