Joseph Drouhin, one of Burgundy’s most established houses, makes this Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru from Pinot Noir farmed biodynamically. Eighteen months in French oak frames a perfumed red of red cherry, violet, raspberry and silky tannin.
Description
Joseph Drouhin is a Beaune house founded in 1882 and an early mover towards sustainable and biodynamic farming in Burgundy. This Premier Cru comes from Chambolle-Musigny in the Côte de Nuits, a village known for the finesse and perfume of its reds. The thin limestone soils over fissured rock, with little clay, give Pinot Noir here a light, lacy texture and floral lift rather than heavy structure. The cool slope and good drainage hold acidity and let the fruit ripen slowly. Biodynamic farming and native yeast fermentation are followed by eighteen months in French oak, a portion new, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a fine spice without masking the fruit. The wine is bright ruby, with red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant over violet, rose and a hint of undergrowth. The palate is elegant and silky, the tannins fine, the acidity fresh, the finish long and mineral. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees in a Burgundy glass, with a short decant if young. It pairs with roast duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
