Josep Grau makes Les Casetes from Garnacha Tinta in Catalonia’s D.O. Montsant. Aged eight months in oak, it is fresh and well-defined, with juicy cherry, ripe strawberry and a peppery, herbal lift over a warm, generous body.
Description
Josep Grau Viticultor works in D.O. Montsant, the Catalan appellation that rings the Priorat, and Les Casetes is his Garnacha Tinta. Montsant's soils range from clay and limestone to the slate-bearing licorella found near Priorat, and the warm, dry Mediterranean climate ripens Garnacha fully, giving the wine its generous fruit and warmth, while cooler nights preserve freshness. The grapes are aged eight months in oak barrels, a measured amount that rounds the tannins and adds a light spice and structure without covering the fruit. The wine is bright and youthful in the glass, with aromas of juicy cherry, ripe strawberry and plum lifted by black pepper, dried herbs and an earthy, mineral edge. The palate is warm and medium to full bodied, with ripe red fruit, soft tannins, a savoury liquorice note and fresh acidity that keeps it balanced despite the ripeness. The finish is long and dry. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, in a large glass. It is a fine partner for grilled and roasted meats.
