Josep Foraster grows this Conca de Barberà red on the family estate near Montblanc, leading with Trepat alongside Garnacha and Syrah. Five months in French oak give a light, fragrant wine of red cherry, redcurrant and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Josep Foraster farms 29 hectares around Montblanc in the high inland Conca de Barberà, in Catalonia. The appellation sits at altitude on poor calcareous soils, and the cool nights of this elevated basin slow ripening and hold acidity, which suits Trepat, a thin-skinned local grape that gives pale, perfumed reds. Garnacha Tinta adds red fruit and weight while a little Syrah lends colour and pepper. The wine spends five months in French oak, a short ageing that softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange without marking the fruit with woody flavour, keeping the focus on freshness. Farming here is mindful of the environment, and the winery works with the local social organisation APRODISCA. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose offers wild red berries, redcurrant and a floral, rose-like top note over dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is light bodied and juicy, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a peppery finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, no decanting needed. It works well with roast chicken, grilled pork and mushroom dishes.
