José Pariente makes Finca la Medina in Rueda from Verdejo on old vines over 40 years, hand picked at night. Fermented in ovoid concrete eggs, it is textured and mineral, with fennel, citrus, white peach and a saline, grassy finish.
Description
Finca la Medina is a single vineyard Verdejo from José Pariente at La Seca in D.O. Rueda, on the high Castilian plateau. The fruit comes from old vines over 40 years of age on the Camino de Puerto, and is hand picked at night into 20 kilogram boxes so the grapes reach the winery cool, with their aromas intact and no risk of premature oxidation in the heat. Rueda's continental climate and wide daily temperature range preserve acidity and the grape's characteristic grassy, herbal aromatics. Fermentation takes place in ovoid concrete eggs rather than steel or oak. The egg shape keeps the fine lees in gentle, constant motion, building texture and weight without any oak flavour, while the porous concrete allows a slow, minimal oxygen exchange that rounds the wine. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose shows fennel, citrus, white peach and a green, grassy note typical of old vine Verdejo. The palate is textured and dry, with good weight from the lees work, firm acidity and a saline, faintly bitter finish that is the mark of serious Verdejo. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white glass. It suits white fish, seafood, poultry and fresh cheeses. Organic.
