José Antonio García makes Julia in Bierzo from old Mencía vines on slate soils around Valtuille de Abajo. Six months in barrel give a fresh, perfumed red of wild strawberry, violet and a fine mineral edge.
Description
José Antonio García farms inherited family plots in Valtuille de Abajo and Corullón, in the D.O. Bierzo of Castilla y León, where the valley meets the foothills of the León mountains. Julia comes from old Mencía vines grown organically on the region's slate and clay soils, which drain freely and force the roots deep, lending the wine its mineral grip and bright acidity. Cool nights and warm days extend ripening and keep the fruit fresh at a modest 12.8 percent alcohol. The wine spends six months in used barrels, enough oak contact to soften the tannins and round the texture without overlaying the fruit. The colour is a vibrant ruby. The nose leads with ripe red fruits, strawberry and red cherry, lifted by floral and faintly peppery aromas. On the palate it is light bodied and fresh, with red-berry fruit, gentle tannin and a savoury, stony finish that reflects the slate. This is a Mencía to drink young and lightly chilled, served around 15 degrees. It suits roast chicken, mushroom dishes and lighter game, and handles charcuterie and grilled vegetables with ease.
