José Antonio García’s Corullón Vino de Villa is a Bierzo village red from old Mencía vines on slate. Barrel aged and organically farmed, it shows cherry, raspberry, floral lift and a graphite minerality.
Description
This Vino de Villa comes from the village of Corullón, in the western, more mountainous part of D.O. Bierzo in Castilla y León. José Antonio García draws it from old Mencía vines planted on the steep slate and quartzite slopes that define the higher Bierzo terraces, soils that drain hard and yield small, concentrated berries with firm acidity. The altitude and the wide diurnal range between warm days and cold nights preserve freshness and aromatic detail through ripening. Farmed organically, the fruit is aged in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange knits the tannins and adds depth without masking the variety. The colour is a bright ruby. The nose mingles floral aromas with fresh red fruits, cherry and raspberry, over an earthy, mineral base. On the palate it is medium bodied and structured, with red and dark fruit, fine grippy tannin and a savoury graphite finish that marks the slate origin. This is a Mencía built for the table and short cellaring. Serve at around 16 to 17 degrees, ideally decanted. It pairs with roast lamb, beef and earthy mushroom dishes.
