Jérôme Galeyrand makes this biodynamic Bourgogne Pinot Noir near Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy. Organic and aged in used oak, it shows bright cherry, red berries and the savoury, earthy depth of the Côte de Nuits.
Description
Jérôme Galeyrand is an admired Burgundy grower based near Gevrey-Chambertin, working organically and biodynamically after starting from a tiny plot of vines. This Bourgogne Antonin is a Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits, the part of Burgundy known for its structured, savoury reds. The vineyards grow on the limestone and clay marl soils that define the region, where each climat carries its own exposure and the limestone gives Pinot Noir its acidity and red fruit precision. The estate works the soil by hand and avoids synthetic treatments. The wine is aged twelve months in used French oak, where the seasoned barrels allow gentle oxygen exchange to soften the tannins and build texture without strong new oak character. The colour is a bright medium ruby. The nose shows cherry, red berries and red currant over forest floor earth and a touch of rose. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannin and a savoury, lightly peppery finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, decanted briefly, with roast duck, chicken or mushroom dishes.
