Jean-Marie Fourrier makes this Echézeaux Grand Cru from Pinot Noir on the limestone slopes of Vosne-Romanée. Twenty months in barrel give ripe red berry, floral perfume, candied orange and a fine smoky, spiced depth.
Description
Jean-Marie Fourrier makes this Echézeaux Grand Cru from Pinot Noir grown on one of the most prized vineyards of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. The Grand Cru sits on a slope of limestone and clay, where the shallow, well-drained calcareous soils and the cool continental climate restrict yields and concentrate the fruit, while the limestone gives the wine its lift and length. The aspect and altitude balance ripeness and acidity, the foundation of fine Burgundy. The wine is raised for twenty months in barrel, a long élevage in which slow oxygen exchange through the wood polishes the silky tannins and builds tertiary layers of spice, earth and smoke around the red fruit without obscuring the site. The colour is bright, translucent ruby. The nose is layered, with ripe red berry and cherry, rose and peony perfume, candied orange peel and a delicate echo of smoke and spice. The palate is medium bodied and refined, with fine, silky tannins, vivid acidity and a long, mineral finish that reflects the limestone. Serve at 16 degrees in a large glass. It is suited to roast duck, game birds and mushroom dishes.
