Jean Leon makes this organic rosé in D.O. Penedès from Pinot Noir and Garnacha grown on its Torrelavit estate near Barcelona. It is pale pink and fresh, with strawberry, raspberry and a clean citrus edge.
Description
Jean Leon 3055 Rosé comes from the winery founded in 1964 at Torrelavit, in the Penedès hills west of Barcelona. The blend of Pinot Noir and Garnacha is grown organically, the Mediterranean climate softened by cooling sea breezes and the elevation of the inland vineyards, which slows ripening and holds acidity in the fruit. Pinot Noir brings red berry lift and finer structure, while Garnacha adds weight and ripe strawberry. The grapes are pressed gently and the juice fermented cool in stainless steel, a temperature controlled ferment that protects the primary aromatics and keeps the wine fresh rather than broad. The result is a pale spring pink. The nose is led by strawberry and raspberry, with a light floral note and a twist of citrus peel. On the palate it is dry and crisp, the red fruit carried by bright acidity to a clean, savoury finish. The organic farming and unoaked vinification keep it direct and food friendly. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or alongside lighter dishes. It works well with grilled prawns, white fish and fresh salads.
