A full proof 1996 Caroni single cask at twenty-two years and 64.3%, mixing tar, rubber and varnish with caramel, milk chocolate, nuts and citrus, sweeter and more chocolate-led than usual, with a long, dry, bitter-edged finish.
Description
This Jack Tar release from the Old Music Series is a single cask of Caroni, the closed Trinidad distillery rescued by Velier in 2004 and now finite and heavily collected. From the 1996 vintage and held twenty-two years, it is bottled at full 64.3% with the strength left intact, a heavy Trinidad rum for drinkers who already know the style.
The nose layers caramel, milk chocolate and vanilla over the distillery's signature tar; the palate brings rubber and wood alongside caramel and vanilla, with a bitter, woody, leathery finish. It carries the industrial Caroni character but in a sweeter, more chocolate-and-citrus register, lighter on the dirty notes than some expect from the vintage. Best poured neat in small measures with time to breathe, it is intense and long without dialling the grime to maximum.
