Description
Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné makes this white in the AOC Côtes du Rhône from Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Viognier and Bourboulenc. The house was founded in 1834 and passed down through the family until 2006, when it was bought by the Frey family, owners of a Bordeaux classed growth and a Champagne house. The wine takes its name from the 45th parallel north, which runs close to the estate at Tain. The blend is built for balance: Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc give freshness and structure, Marsanne adds weight and a waxy texture, and a little Viognier fills out the aromatics. Part of the wine sees wood, which rounds the palate without masking the fruit. It is pale gold in the glass, with white peach, pear and honeysuckle on the nose over a faint almond note. The palate is medium bodied and supple, with ripe orchard and stone fruit held by fresh acidity through a clean finish. Serve it at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast chicken, grilled white fish and mild soft cheeses.
