A vintage Appleton 12 in a ceramic jug, showing an old-school Jamaican profile of dried and tropical fruit, polished wood, caramel and chocolate, an unsweetened, historic sipper at 43% with more intensity than modern bottlings.
Description
J. Wray & Nephew Appleton Reserve Rare Old Jamaican Rum (Ceramic) is a vintage 12 year Appleton bottling from the storied Jamaican house, presented unsweetened in a ceramic decanter at 43%. As an older release of a familiar name, it offers a window into how the distillery's flagship aged rum used to taste, a genuine piece of liquid history.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, it delivers a deep, old-school Jamaican profile, dried and tropical fruit, polished wood, caramel and chocolate, with hints of tar, polish and even a savoury, jerky-like note that recalls the heavier marques. The nose is notably more intense than the current 12 year old, fuller and richer with dried fig and old casks, and the palate keeps that oily, fruity, lightly smoky depth. A relaxed, contemplative sipper that rewards anyone curious about how classic Jamaican rum has evolved.
