A vintage 1966 Martinique rhum agricole from J. Bally, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice on a creole column and bottled at 45%, the kind of old slim-bottle agricole that trades on history as much as on cane.
Description
J. Bally Plantations Lajus du Carbet 1966 is an old Martinique rhum agricole bearing a 1966 vintage, presented in the slim bottle that long marked the house. Bally built its name on aged agricole at the foot of Mont Pelee, and survivors from this era are sought after by collectors of the style.
Like all true agricole it is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses, here through a creole column run low to keep the grassy, vegetal cane character in the spirit. With long oak ageing behind it, an old Bally of this kind typically leans drier and more spice forward than sweet molasses rum, the grassy core wrapped in toasted oak and baking spice. Bottled at 45% and unsweetened, as agricole always is.
