A Martinique vintage from J. Bally dating to 1985, distilled from cane juice and showing classic Bally markers, dried fruit, citrus and cardamom over a woody, licorice-and-pepper palate, dry and refined at 45%.
Description
J. Bally Plantation Lajus du Carbet 1985 is a vintage Martinique rhum agricole from J. Bally, a name long associated with aged and vintage cane rum, distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice. As a 1985 vintage it is a properly old agricole, the kind of long-matured bottling that shows what decades in cask can do to French-island cane spirit.
Light in colour but deep in flavour, it carries the classic Bally signature: citrus, dried fruit, sugarcane and cardamom on the nose, then a woody, spice-forward palate of licorice, dried fruit and pepper, finishing on wood, licorice and burnt sugar. The character is dry and refined, the wood integrated rather than dominant, the cane still legible beneath the age. It is a measured, mature sipper rather than a flashy one, rewarding patient neat drinking at 45% for those who appreciate vintage agricole at its most composed.
