A Martinique vintage agricole from fresh cane juice, bottled unsweetened at a relaxed 43%, with fresh sugarcane and gentle wood, pear and dried fruit threaded by light tobacco, leather and herbs.
Description
J. Bally is a Martinique name known for its pyramid bottles and its vintages, and this 2003 millesime is the house in everyday, easygoing form. It is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses and bottled with no added sugar, so its character comes from cane and cask alone.
The nose is warm and fruity, woody with leather and a vegetal cane lift, and the palate keeps things light, floral and fruity over soft oak with a clear agricole green note running through. The finish is woody and gently spiced with a floral, herbal edge. At a relaxed 43% it sits firmly in everyday-pour territory, a characterful but undemanding vieux for those who want the agricole signature without the weight or heat of a cask-strength bottling.
