A Martinique vintage agricole from J. Bally, 1999 cane juice rhum off the creole column bottled at 43%, layered and quirky with sherry and stone fruit aromas leading into caramel, plum, cherry and cocoa.
Description
J. Bally is a storied Martinique name, an estate going back to 1660 whose rum is now produced at the La Mauny site, and this 1999 Millesime is a vintage agricole from fresh pressed sugarcane juice. Distilled on a creole column, the single tall copper still that defines agricole character, and bottled unsweetened at 43%, it carries the weight of more than two decades of age.
The nose is unusual and a little wild, mixing sherry, a medicinal edge, peaches and a fruit schnapps lift, while the palate turns to caramel and pear with a slightly furry, spirity texture. The finish is the most rewarding stretch, unwinding into plum, cherry, cocoa and brown sugar. This is an idiosyncratic old agricole rather than a smooth crowd pleaser, dry in build but full of dark fruit and oak nuance from long ageing. It suits patient drinkers who enjoy a vintage rhum with rough edges and a story, sipped slowly and neat.
