A dry, wood-driven Martinique agricole from J. Bally drawn from the 1998 vintage and distilled from fresh cane juice, where roasted oak and raisin lead over toasted nuts and dried fruit, gently warming at a restrained 43%.
Description
J. Bally is a historic Martinique estate, its agricole now distilled at the La Mauny site but retaining the classic vieux character the name is known for. This 1998 vintage is distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice on a column still, in the dry, no-added-sugar tradition of the island.
Bottled at 43%, it leads with roasted oak, dried fruit and a nutty, spiced nose, then turns dry and round on the palate before a finish of roasted almonds, raisin and toasted wood. This is the savoury, mature side of aged agricole, where toasted barrel and subtle dried fruit take the lead rather than sweetness. Approachable in strength yet genuinely characterful, it suits slow sipping for anyone who prefers a classic, wood-forward vieux over a fruit-driven one.
