J. Bally Millésime 1997

J. Bally is a storied Martinique name, famed for its pyramidal bottles and long tradition of vintage agricole, now distilled at the La Mauny site. This 1997 Millesime is full AOC rhum agricole, made from fresh pressed sugarcane juice on a column still and matured for years in the Caribbean heat before bottling at a classic 43 percent.

Tropical ageing has given it colour and a fruit forward maturity while keeping things graceful rather than heavy. The nose is fragrant with almond, citrus, sandalwood and floral notes, the palate turns fruity with baked apple, cinnamon and oak, and the finish carries peach and barrel with real intensity. The wood leans toward the drier, more elegant side of aged agricole, occasionally showing as a touch lean, which keeps the fruit and spice in focus. This is a refined vintage cane juice rum for unhurried, contemplative sipping.
