A historic Martinique agricole carrying the 1929 vintage from J. Bally, deep and antique with dried fruit, caramel, leather and cigar-leaf wood, bottled unsweetened at an elegant 45% that trades brute force for layered nuance.
Description
J. Bally Millesime 1929 is a rare slice of agricole history, an early vintage from the Bally estate, distilled from fresh sugar-cane juice in the Martinique tradition. Bally pioneered the dated vintage agricole, and a bottling carrying this year is the kind of thing built for slow study rather than casual pouring. It is unsweetened, as agricole always is, so the depth here is all oak and time.
Long tropical ageing at origin pushes hard extraction from the barrel, and that shows in a nose of dried fruit, caramel and roasted wood and a palate of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and supple leather that carries into a woody, leather-laced finish. At 45% it is poised and reflective rather than aggressive, an old-style agricole that rewards patience and a clean glass, all about nuance over power.
