A 1986 vintage J. Bally agricole from Martinique, fresh cane juice aged into a dry, spice forward profile of toasted oak, almond, coffee and pepper, the grassy core long since folded into mature wood at 45%.
Description
This Habitation Lajus Carbet vintage continues the historic J. Bally line of Martinique agricole, distilled from fresh pressed sugar cane juice in the AOC manner and now produced at the La Mauny distillery. Carrying a 1986 vintage, it shows the dry, savoury character that long tropical ageing draws out of a cane juice spirit, the green snap of youth replaced by depth.
The nose opens on wood, vanilla, oak and almond, while the palate turns nutty and woody with coffee and a peppery bite, more spice driven than sweet. The finish carries coffee, oak, soft spice and a fruity thread, with the grassy agricole character still detectable beneath the baking spices. Bottled at 45% and unsweetened, it leans toward the drier, more structured end of aged cane juice rum, a contemplative pour that rewards slow sipping rather than mixing, and a window onto how Martinique's older vintages mature.
