A polished commemorative Martinique AOC agricole from J. Bally, distilled from fresh cane juice off the Creole column, layered with wood, dried and tropical fruit, nuts, wax and cane, elegant and unsweetened at a gentle 45%.
Description
J. Bally is a storied Martinique name famous for its pyramid carafes and old vintages, and this Grande Cuvee du Siecle marks a hundred years with a blend made from fresh pressed sugar cane juice on a Creole column still under the island's AOC. It is bottled unsweetened at a gentle 45%, built for elegance rather than power.
The profile is layered and harmonious, with wood, vanilla and pepper on the nose giving way to a vegetal, leathery palate threaded with sugarcane, and a finish of dried fruit, tobacco and coffee. Tropical fruit, nuts and a waxy richness fill out the middle, the grassy cane core still present beneath the maturity and kept dry in the appellation tradition. At 45% it reads as a refined, contemplative sipper that prizes balance and depth over impact, an old style aged agricole for drinkers who want layered character without cask strength weight.
