A 1989 vintage Martinique agricole from J. Bally at an approachable 45%, distinctly pear-driven with woody, floral and spicy layers, cinnamon and a violet-tinged finish that unfolds slowly with air.
Description
J. Bally has made Martinique agricole since 1989's vintage was laid down and far earlier, the brand dating to the early twentieth century and now distilled within the La Mauny group. This 1989 is a vintage agricole from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice, distilled on a column still and bottled at a gentle 45% that belies how much is going on in the glass.
With no dosage declared in the agricole tradition, the nose is unusually pear-forward, intense and fruity with wood underneath, while the palate carries woody depth, cinnamon, citrus and that same ripe pear. The finish turns dry and bitter-edged with a floral, violet lift and lingering warmth. This is a characterful older agricole that does not lean on cask strength for its impact, rewarding slow sipping as the pear, florals and spice keep shifting. A fine after-dinner pour for those who prize evolution over power.
