A pre-war Martinique agricole from J. Bally, the estate that pioneered vintage-dated rhum, distilled from fresh cane juice and bottled from a 1939 harvest at 45%, an antique vieux in the dry, spice-led island style.
Description
J. Bally 1939 carries one of the most historic dates in Martinique rum. Bally was the house that helped establish the idea of the vintage-dated agricole, and this bottling draws on a 1939 harvest, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses.
Bottled at 45%, this is a very old island agricole, and decades of maturation push it far beyond a typical age statement. A rhum of this vintage tends to trade the grassy snap of youth for tobacco, leather, soft wood and gentle fruit, dry and layered, with a long rounded finish. A rare antique pour to be taken slowly.
