A cask-strength single-cask Isautier from Reunion, finished in cognac wood and bottled at a punchy 59%, bursting with red berries, peaches and honeycomb over mango, with a mineral, allspice-laced finish, intense and fruit-driven.
Description
This La Cour Foundation is a 2009 cane-juice rum from Isautier on Reunion, a single cask matured thirteen years and bottled at cask strength, 59% and unsweetened. Reunion sits outside the Martinique AOC, so this is agricole in spirit rather than name, and the cognac cask gives it an unusually fruity, expressive character.
Pressed from fresh sugarcane juice and aged in cognac wood, it leans heavily into red fruit. The nose is intense with berries, peaches, honeycomb and mango, the palate carries peaches, blackberry and tropical fruit under a clear cognac imprint, and the finish brings berries, allspice, a mineral streak and light oak. At 59% it has real punch and definition, best poured small and neat or with a few drops of water. A characterful, fruit-forward cask-driven rum that rewards drinkers who like aged agricole with extra intensity.
