Iria Otero makes this Albariño in D.O. Rías Baixas with Diego Velázquez, aged six months on its lees. Atlantic and saline, it blends citrus and white flowers with a hint of sea breeze and a fresh, savoury finish.
Description
Sal de Albariño is a single-variety Albariño from Iria Otero, a Galician winemaker working here in partnership with Diego Velázquez. The wine comes from D.O. Rías Baixas on Spain's Atlantic northwest, a cool, wet and maritime region where Albariño thrives. The sea air and high rainfall, together with the thick-skinned, aromatic grape, give a white of high natural acidity and a distinct saline character. The wine is aged for six months on its lees. Keeping the wine in contact with the spent yeast adds texture and a fine savoury depth through the slow release of mannoproteins, filling out the mid palate while the fruit stays fresh and precise. Farming follows a respectful, low-intervention approach. The wine is pale and bright. The nose is Atlantic and clean, with lemon and citrus peel, delicate white flowers and a clear hint of sea breeze. The palate is fresh and savoury, the lees giving weight against a firm line of acidity, with green apple and white peach and a saline, mineral finish. This is a coastal white built for the table. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees with shellfish and Atlantic seafood.
