Description
A grain distillery in the malt heartland of the Northern Highlands, Invergordon sends most of its spirit into blends, leaving single grain releases to independent bottlers. This single cask was bottled by A.D. Rattray, distilled in 1988, at 33 years old, for its Vintage Cask Collection range. Single cask number 8160 yielded 318 bottles, released for Europe.
Invergordon is a grain distillery rather than a malt one, distilling a mash of maize, wheat and barley through tall continuous column stills to a light, high strength spirit. Matured in ex-Bourbon casks.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 48.9%, without dilution, the ex-Bourbon wood gives vanillin for vanilla and oak lactones for coconut, with maltol for butterscotch. Recorded bottle notes run to a light solvent lift, fresh orchard fruit, honey, a faint medicinal note and a sweaty note. Long maturation has layered tropical fruit and a buttery, waxy weight over the grain's natural sweetness.
