Made at the Abadía de Poblet in D.O. Conca de Barberà, Intramurs de Poblet Negre blends Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Four months in French oak gives a young, fresh red of red berries, cherry and gentle spice.
Description
Intramurs de Poblet Negre comes from the Abadía de Poblet, the Cistercian monastery north of Tarragona in D.O. Conca de Barberà, where the project to recover local varieties and traditional methods is run with the backing of the Codorníu group. It blends Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in this inland Catalan appellation, a high cool valley ringed by mountains where altitude and a wide day-to-night temperature swing keep the fruit fresh and the acidity bright. The poor calcareous soils limit yields and give the wine its clear definition. This is a young red, aged just four months in French oak barrels, enough to settle the tannins and add a light touch of vanilla and sweet spice while keeping the focus on primary fruit. It pours bright ruby, with a nose of red berries, cherry and plum over a faint herbal, savoury note. The palate is medium bodied and fresh at 13% alcohol, with soft tannins, lively acidity and an easy, drinkable finish. It is made to be drunk young and slightly cool. Serve at 15 to 16C with everyday meat dishes and tomato-based cooking.
