Intipalka grows Tannat in the desert Ica Valley of Peru, where intense sun and cool nights ripen this firm-tannined grape. Made in stainless steel only, it stays dark and fresh, with plum, black pepper and a structured, savoury grip.
Description
Intipalka Tannat comes from the Ica Valley on Peru's desert coast, one of the oldest winegrowing zones in the Americas. Tannat, the firm, deeply coloured grape of South West France and Uruguay, thrives in this dry, sunny climate, where bright daytime sun ripens the fruit fully and cool Pacific-influenced nights hold the acidity and freshness. The desert soils are poor and free-draining, which limits vigour and concentrates the dark fruit and tannin the variety is known for. This wine is raised only in stainless steel for three months, with no oak, so the focus stays on pure varietal character: the inert tank keeps the wine fresh and primary, letting the grape's natural structure show without wood flavour. It pours an inky purple and shows ripe plum and red berry fruit with black pepper, liquorice and a savoury, earthy depth, plus a dark cocoa edge. The palate is full and firmly tannic, true to the grape, with a long, grippy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted to soften the tannins, with grilled and barbecued red meat.
