Ingenio San Carlos Grander Peated Finish Single Barrel

This Grander single barrel from Ingenio San Carlos is a twelve-year-old Panamanian rum finished in a peated whisky cask and bottled unsweetened at cask strength. It is among the more unusual things a Panamanian distillery can offer, the smoky cask transforming the origin's typically soft, vanilla-led column-molasses character into something far bolder.

The nose is dominated by smoke and peat, with orange and wood emerging underneath once the rum is given time to rest in the glass. The palate turns nutty and spiced with a thread of coffee, the peat influence carrying through. At a forceful 62.3% it benefits from patience and a little water before it fully opens. This is a peat-driven, cask-strength Panamanian aimed squarely at whisky drinkers, a smoky curiosity rather than a soft after-dinner ron.
