An atypically dry, oak driven Long Pond bottled by Infinity Spirits, this 16 year single cask trades the usual estery softness for baked banana, bitter chocolate and glue, an unsweetened pot still rum at a warm 53%.
Description
Long Pond is the historic Wedderburn house of Trelawny, usually fruit forward and funky, but this 16 year single cask under the Royal Cane Cask Company label is the outlier of the range. Many find it reads closer to a dry Clarendon than a classic Long Pond, with the wood given more room than the fruit, and Infinity Spirits has left it unsweetened at a still approachable 53%.
Distilled on the pot still from molasses and matured in an ex-bourbon barrel, the spirit shows ripe banana and salted nuts alongside licorice, allspice and a peppery, gingery lift. The palate is woody and gluey with that signature ester edge, and the finish carries bitter chocolate, dried fig and a touch of saltiness. The alcohol can feel a little forward for the strength, so this suits drinkers who enjoy drier, wood led Jamaicans and do not need the softest, juiciest expression of the distillery.
