Description
Built in 1871 near the fishing port of Buckie, Inchgower makes a briny, nutty malt that has long been a backbone of Bell's. Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin merchant and bottler, selected this single cask, distilled in 2009, and released it at 9 years old in its Cask Strength range. It came from single cask 803986, released for the Netherlands.
Inchgower's four stills carry steeply angled lyne arms that hold back the heavier, oilier vapours, part of why the malt comes out nutty, waxy and faintly saline. This bottling matured in an Oloroso sherry cask.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 55.1%, without dilution, the Oloroso butt drives fig and date, the spirit's saline edge cutting through the sherry sweetness. At under ten years the cask has had only a short time to work, so Inchgower's own salty, waxy spirit still leads. The recorded notes run to cocoa, stewed fruit, dried fruit, fresh orchard fruit, honey and a sherry note.
