Description
Few Speyside distilleries taste of the sea, but Inchgower, near the Buckie fishing harbour, carries a briny, waxy character into almost everything it makes. Douglas Laing, a Glasgow bottling house, bottled this and released it at 8 years old in its Premier Barrel range. The outturn was 389 bottles, released for Europe.
Inchgower's four stills carry steeply angled lyne arms that hold back the heavier, oilier vapours, part of why the malt comes out nutty, waxy and faintly saline. This bottling matured in an ex-Bourbon cask.
Bottled at 46%, the ex-Bourbon barrel adds vanilla from vanillin and a coconut note from oak lactones, over a light cereal sweetness. At under ten years the cask has had only a short time to work, so Inchgower's own salty, waxy spirit still leads.
