Description
Inchgower sits on the Moray Firth coast outside Buckie, a Speyside distillery in name whose malt is salty and savoury in a way the region's usually are not. Hunter Laing, the Glasgow independent formed in the 2013 family split, bottled this, distilled in 2008, and released it at 15 years old in its The Old Malt Cask - 25th Anniversary range. The outturn was 710 bottles, released for Europe.
A quick mashing regime and a warmer second water give Inchgower the savoury, saline character that earns it the Manzanilla of Speyside nickname. This bottling matured in an Oloroso sherry cask.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 50%, without dilution, the Oloroso butt drives fig and date, the spirit's saline edge cutting through the sherry sweetness. At 15 years the wood and the salty, nutty spirit are roughly in balance. The recorded notes run to a cooked vegetable note, leather, cocoa, a cereal mash note, dried hay and honey.
