Description
Few Speyside distilleries taste of the sea, but Inchgower, near the Buckie fishing harbour, carries a briny, waxy character into almost everything it makes. van Wees selected this single cask, distilled in 2008, and released it at 14 years old in its The Ultimate range. Single cask 801189 gave 263 bottles, released for Germany.
Inchgower's four stills carry steeply angled lyne arms that hold back the heavier, oilier vapours, part of why the malt comes out nutty, waxy and faintly saline. This bottling matured in an ex-Bourbon cask.
Bottled at 46%, American oak from the ex-Bourbon cask supplies vanilla and coconut, with eugenol adding a touch of clove. At 14 years the wood and the salty, nutty spirit are roughly in balance. The recorded notes run to fresh oak, seasoned oak and a dry, sandy note.
