Description
On the Cromarty side of the Moray Firth, Inchgower distils a coastal, savoury malt that has fed Bell's and other Diageo blends for decades. The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, selected this single cask, distilled in 2011, and released it at 11 years old in its The Cooper's Choice range. Single cask 803818 gave 324 bottles, released for Europe.
The distillery's spirit is built for body rather than elegance, nutty and waxy with a coastal salt note unusual for Speyside. This bottling matured in an ex-Bourbon cask with a finish in an Oloroso sherry cask.
Bottled at its natural cask strength of 55%, without dilution, the ex-Bourbon barrel adds vanilla from vanillin and a coconut note from oak lactones, over a light cereal sweetness, and the Oloroso butt drives fig and date, the spirit's saline edge cutting through the sherry sweetness. At 11 years the wood and the salty, nutty spirit are roughly in balance.
