Description
With Imperial demolished in 2013 and silent since 1998, bottlings like this are among the last records of a lost Speyside distillery. This single cask was filled in 1991 and bottled by Gordon & MacPhail at 9 years old, for its Private Collection range. Single cask number 99/360 1 yielded 600 bottles, released for the Netherlands.
Imperial's spirit was light and fruity, the Speyside character built for blending, which is part of why single malt releases stayed uncommon. This bottling matured in an ex-Cognac cask. Across 9 years, an ex-Cognac cask carries aromatics derived from grape, distinct from the cereal sweetness of bourbon wood.
Bottled at 40%, the ex-Cognac wood adds floral lift and dried apricot, with a vinous sweetness and soft oak underneath. Recorded bottle notes run to seasoned oak. Imperial's orchard fruit runs through to a soft, lightly oaked finish.
