Description
Imperial ceased distilling in 1998 and the buildings at Carron were demolished in 2013, so every remaining bottle draws on spirit laid down before that final silence. This single cask was filled in 1982 and bottled by Ian Macleod at 24 years old, for its Chieftain's Choice range. Single cask number 3712 yielded 720 bottles, released for Belgium.
Imperial's spirit was light and fruity, the Speyside character built for blending, which is part of why single malt releases stayed uncommon. This bottling matured in an ex-Fino sherry cask. Across 24 years, the ex-Fino cask stays drier and more delicate than darker sherry styles, a result of the flor it had matured under.
Bottled at 46%, the ex-Fino cask leans nutty rather than sweet, with almond and a faint saline edge over light wood tannins. The finish stays dry and savoury, with the distillery's fruit holding under the wood.
