Description
Il Moralizzatore is a small biodynamic and natural-wine project in the Veneto, in the foothill country of northern Italy, working with native grapes and minimal intervention. Groppero is its take on Groppello, a light-bodied red variety long grown around the hills near Lake Garda and the Veneto plain, prized for perfume and freshness rather than weight. The morainic and clay-limestone soils of these foothills drain well and sit at modest altitude, where cool nights coming off the mountains preserve acidity and the bright, red-fruited aromatics the grape is known for. Farming is biodynamic and the wine is made naturally, fermented with native yeasts and bottled without heavy additions, so the fruit speaks plainly. Time in barrel softens the gentle tannin and lends a savoury frame rather than obvious oak. The wine pours a pale to medium ruby and shows fresh red berries, cherry and red currant lifted by a floral, rose-like note, with black pepper and a light earthiness behind. The palate is light and bright, low in tannin, with crisp acidity and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees in a medium glass. It is a versatile, food-friendly red for lighter dishes.
