Salvo Foti grows this Etna rosé high on the volcano from old Grenache, Grecanico and Minella vines. Five months on its lees in steel gives it red berry and white peach fruit, a saline edge and a savoury volcanic minerality.
Description
I Vigneri is Salvo Foti's grower project on the slopes of Mount Etna, working old bush vines by traditional Sicilian methods with minimal intervention. The wine is a field blend of Grenache, Grecanico and Minella grown on dark volcanic soils of weathered lava, ash and pumice, which drain freely and lend a savoury, mineral character. Altitude on Etna brings cool nights and a wide diurnal range, holding back ripeness and fixing fresh acidity and aromatic detail in the fruit. Vinified in stainless steel and rested five months on its fine lees, the wine gains light texture and breadth without oak, the lees autolysis softening the palate while preserving the volcano's saline grip. The colour is pale coral. The nose shows wild strawberry, white peach and citrus peel over white flowers and a mineral, almost smoky earthiness. The palate is dry and taut, with red berry fruit, a savoury herbal note and a salty finish that reflects the soil. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits grilled fish, shellfish and lighter Mediterranean vegetable dishes.
