Description
I Vigneri, led by Salvo Foti, works on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, farming organically with traditional methods and old vines and reviving an association of winegrowers that dates to 1435. Il Vino dei Vigneri is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, the two grapes of Etna Rosso. The terroir is defined by black volcanic soils, sand and decomposed lava that are rich in minerals and drain freely. Vineyards sit high on the mountain, where altitude and cool nights produce a wide diurnal range, holding acidity and giving the wine its lifted, savoury aromatics and fine structure. Ageing in clay amphorae allows slow, gentle oxygen exchange without adding any wood flavour, keeping the wine fresh and transparent to its volcanic origin. The colour is bright medium ruby, paler than its 14.8 percent alcohol suggests. The nose shows red cherry and wild berries, dried herbs, a smoky, ashy mineral note and a touch of pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, firm but fine tannins, bright acidity and a long, saline, mineral finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits game birds, poultry and mushroom dishes.
